South Beach

South Beach is the postcard most Australians picture when they book Miami: the pastel Art Deco strip along Ocean Drive, Lummus Park's palm-lined promenade, and a beach with water so warm it makes Bondi in February feel brisk. It is also, hands down, our most requested drop-off.

From Miami International it is only about eleven miles across the MacArthur Causeway, a 20 to 30 minute run with the cruise ships lined up on your right and the Miami skyline behind you. It is a genuinely great introduction to the city, best enjoyed from the back seat with a cold bottle of water rather than from a rideshare queue in the garage. From Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood the trip is around thirty miles, typically 40 to 55 minutes down the I-95.

A word from experience: South Beach streets are narrow, one-way and heavily patrolled, and many hotels on Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive have no real driveway.
